Treo 700p: First Blush
November 16th, 2006 | by nomaded | 3 viewsThere's a bit of a story behind this.
A few months back, my lovely girlfriend decided that she wanted to buy for my birthday a Treo 700p. The plan was that I would get a 700p, and at the same time, I would upgrade my plan to a Family plan, she would get her phone number ported and we'd add my old Treo 650 to the plan as her phone - she was getting tired of carrying both a phone and a Palm PDA.
Well, long story short, I didn't qualify for the upgrade promo because 2 years did not pass yet since I bought and activate my old 650. So we still did the Family plan switch (because it works out to be cheaper to have 2 phones under one plan), and she ended up buying a 700p for herself. She loves the 700p and the connectivity it allows her during her daily commute. As for me, she still wanted to buy me a 700p, and my 2 years was up a few weeks ago, so I got my 700p a couple days ago.
At first, I was a little reluctant to upgrade because my 650 was in a stable state for a while now, and I wasn't sure if all the Palm apps I used regularly would work correctly with the 700p. Fortunately, unlike when I got the 650, several months had passed, so that there was time for the apps to be upgraded with 700p support (being on the bleeding-edge with the 650 was actually pretty annoying).
But back to the first impressions. I've held my gf's 700p before, so I already knew that it feels smaller than the 650, even though it really isn't. We think it's because of the curves on the back, which allows the hand to feel like it's more wrapped around the phone.
Of course, the 2nd thing I did after leaving the Sprint store was to head to the closest CompOOSA and picked up a set of standard eGrips for the phone - I had eGrips along the sides and back of the 650. I wish the 700p came with the rubberized finish that's on the Special Edition 650 and on the 680 and 750v. Yeah, I suppose I could have gone with the 700p-specific eGrips, but for $10, this is good enough for me. Luckily, I'm quite happy with the Krusell case that I got for the 650, so I'm reusing that.
I think I'll go over software some other time.
So far, I'm pretty happy with the Treo 700p. It's not a huge change from the 650, but I'm starting to really like EVDO. Time to put my old 650 on
